The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a unique type of salamander that stays in its larval state throughout its entire life. This phenomenon is known as neoteny.
In the wild, these "water monsters" are found exclusively in the lake complex of Xochimilco, near Mexico City. Unlike other salamanders, they live underwater permanently.
