The Amazing Axolotl

What is an Axolotl?

The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a unique type of salamander that stays in its larval state throughout its entire life. This phenomenon is known as neoteny.

Fun Fact: Axolotls can regenerate entire limbs, hearts, and even parts of their brains without any scarring!

The Natural World

In the wild, these "water monsters" are found exclusively in the lake complex of Xochimilco, near Mexico City. Unlike other salamanders, they live underwater permanently.
